December Confessions

December 9, 2011

You know when you love something … and then suddenly it’s gone? It feels like a hole in your life that you don’t know how to fill.

For me, that hole is Harry Potter.

Okay, maybe that’s just a bit dramatic, but reading Harry Potter every night has become an essential part of my schedule. Work has been crazy busy, with long hours and lots of stress, and reading about that dorky little kid every night before bed has been a savior.

I’m in the market for a new obsession. I’m thinking it definitely has to be in the form of something to read, because if it’s a TV series or something like that, I’ll never go to sleep. That was the problem when I was obsessed with Felicity – I would stay up all night, promising myself “just one more episode.” My friend Dawn and I were just laughing the other day about how addicting that show is – I distinctly remember the relief in her voice when she finished the series finale. “I feel like I finally have my life back!”

I’m open to your book suggestions. However, fair warning, I’ve recently come to an epiphany about books and life in general. A friend loaned this book to me that she loved, and I gave it a shot. About 80 pages in, I was miserable. I was bored and hated every second of reading this book. It just wasn’t for me. But, I didn’t want to quit – I’ve never given up reading a book in my entire life.

And then it hit me: Life is too short to waste your time doing something you don’t love.

This is not a call for you all to quit your jobs, or stop cleaning your houses and paying your bills. Obviously you can’t love what you are doing every second of the day. But if you find that you are doing more things that don’t fulfill you than things that do, maybe it’s time for reconsideration.

End of public service announcement.

Now that we’re deep in the holiday season, I’m reminded of how much pressure there is at this time of the year to be perfect. No one’s perfect, everyone says, yet everywhere you look, there are perfect families, perfect presents, perfect Christmas trees, seemingly perfect lives … it’s a little overwhelming.

I am so not perfect. Not even close. And there a few imperfections and confessions I need to get off my chest. Without further ado, here are my December confessions:

  • When people tell me to tell someone hi for them or to give them a hug, I never do it. NEVER. I am an unreliable messenger. slanket-3
  • My Words with Friends obsession is comparable to Alec Baldwin’s.
  • I own a Slanket. Like a Snuggie, but better.
  • I watch the Chicago WGN news more often than my own local news. It comes on every night right after How I Met Your Mother, and I’ve developed this strange affinity for the crazy happenings of Chicago.
  • I will do absolutely anything to avoid folding laundry. When I need to fold laundry, I do about a million other things instead. Sweep, mop, vacuum, clean the toilet, make the bed, volunteer at a soup kitchen, whew, I’m exhausted. Guess the laundry can wait another day to be folded. Hell, I’ll even wash more laundry to avoid folding the laundry that’s already clean. Chef saw my mountain of laundry (about four months of clean clothes) and offered to help with the folding. But, the thought of him holding up my pants pondering the size of my ass made me deny his generous offer.
  • My problem letting go is well documented. I recently realized I also have a problem letting go of office supplies. I have a stapler at work that only brings me heartache and fury. It barely works and I can often be found cussing in my office at how useless it is. I’m also still using my calculator from the ninth grade. Yes, you heard me right. Ninth grade. It was the first scientific calculator I’ve ever bought, and I can distinctly remember my dad complaining about how expensive it was. I used this same calculator through high school, college and my first six years at my agency. Well, the trouble is, the decimal point and the 0 barely work. You can see how this is a problem. Yet I refuse to let it go.
  • I have a receipt hoarding problem. I have kept almost every receipt for the past 10 years. This is how it starts: I keep a bunch of receipts in my wallet. I primarily hold on to them so I can double-check that the right amount has been charged on my credit card. Eventually, I have too many receipts to fit in my wallet, so I fold them and keep them in my purse. When I have too many receipts in my purse, I move them to a shoe box. So –> wallet. Too big for wallet –> purse. Too big for purse – >shoe box. Shoe box is full –> another shoe box. Times that by 10 years. You will see my problem.

I wish that Chef worked at a more wholesome restaurant. Like Cracker Barrel. When I first started dating Chef, he co-owned a restaurant in Richmond. While he works to sell his shares of that restaurant, he is now a sous chef at a popular restaurant/night club (you may remember my fun times there). He loves his job – and I’m happy for him – but lately I’ve been struggling with some feelings of inadequacy and nervousness related to his job. You see, this night club is chock full of go-go dancers, half-dressed female bartenders and hundreds of beautiful women in skin-tight dresses and miniskirts. I trust Chef, but knowing he’s surrounded by these women every single night at work is making me really anxious.

  • I’m too lazy for Christmas. Maybe the Christmas tree debacle of last year is deterring me, but I am once again having troubles getting my tree up. Chef put the tree up, and we have now scheduled two times to decorate it together. We spent those two times when we should have been decorating, sitting on the couch, staring at the tree, and bemoaning how we don’t feel like getting up and decorating it. I also have yet to buy a single Christmas gift. #FAIL

Now it’s your turn: Any confessions you want to get off your chest? Any book suggestions? Is it just me or are those little slips that fall out of magazines the most annoying thing on earth? They are like the only legal form of littering!

Confession: Today, my hair looks like lasagna because I used one of those silly crimping irons.

Book suggestion: Bossypants by Tina Fey. So effin’ fun — and mindless — and an easy read (I read it almost in its entirety on my flight from South Carolina to Reno. After browsing the Sky Mall and pondering “Slanket versus Snuggie.” Clearly after your confession, the Slanket should be victorious.)

Advice: Get to work on that darn tree. It is NOT going to decorate itself!

Parting words: Happy holidays, Catherine! 🙂

    • December 9, 2011 4:34 pm

Happy Holidays to you too, Mikalee! DEFINITELY get the Slanket. Much better quality than the Snuggie – they just didn’t spend as much on marketing :). But, gotta admit, it’s impossible to look sexy wearing a Slanket. Trust me, I’ve tried.

Haha I think it’s hilarious that you tried the crimping iron! When I was out the other night, I saw this woman with her hair crimped. It looked amazing…and she looked so cool, so different. I decided I wanted to be just like her and have been fantasizing ever since about buying a crimping iron. Maybe considering your feedback, I’ll forgo that idea… haha

Thanks for the book suggestion. I LOVE Tina Fey so I bet I’d really like it.

Smiling BIG because I just wrote a similar post about comparing myself…measuring up yesterday!!

(And if it makes you feel better, tree UP at my house without a SINGLE decoration!!)

    • December 9, 2011 4:35 pm

Ooh, I’ll have to check it out! You should link to your blog when you comment, I bet my readers would like it 🙂
That DOES make me feel better. Whew. At least I’m not the only one staring at an undecorated tree.

  3. December 9, 2011 4:36 pm

I’m sorry, but unless you’ve grounded a flight because of your Words With Friends compulsion, Alec Baldwin’s got it all over you. Just wait until the “I beat Alec Baldwin at WWF and all I got was this stupid t-shirt” tees come out.

My confession is this: my dinner last night consisted of Coco Pops washed down with vodka and orange juice. And I loved it.

    Thanks for an amusing post!

    • December 13, 2011 10:35 pm

Ha, okay, maybe I’m a little saner than Alec. But, I do find myself playing WWF at the most innapropriate times… my favorites include walking to my car, in the elevator and in the bathroom. LOL 🙂

That dinner sounds DELICIOUS! You just needed some ice cream for dessert.

Ive a date with a guy ive been chatting to online tomoro so cross your fingers for me that hes nice and normal!! Its a nice distraction anyway! Keep up the good work. x

I will recommend my favorite book series ever, The Dark Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It is romance, vampires, Gods, Goddesses and all sorts of other mythology and fantasy rolled into one breathtaking storyline. I fall in love with each new book and each new character. I am addicted and love the series so much I am re-reading all of them while I wait for the newest installment to come out in August.

    • December 13, 2011 10:28 pm

      Bonda,
I’ve never heard of these – sounds interesting! Definitely an escape…. I tend to read a lot of realistic books and I was surprised at how much I liked this imaginary world of Harry Potter. I’m thinking fantasy might be a genre I could get into. Appreciate your suggestion.

Oh yeah, I also wanted to tell you about the Game of Thrones series of books by George R.R. Martin. The first one was recently made into a TV series. Its kind of historical fantasy thing but dont be put off by that, the characters and the stories are FAB!! Try it and see….

  7. December 9, 2011 5:33 pm

Ok, so, book wise, if you’re into books where you think you know what’s going on the entire time, then you get to the end and you were completely wrong, I’d definitely recommend Chuck Palahniuk. Very psychological thriller type books. If you want something you don’t have to think too much about, any of Chelsea Handler’s books!

    • December 9, 2011 7:39 pm

Oh, and confession, I HATE hanging out my clothes. Folding and putting away, no big deal, but I have a pile of clothes that need to be hung up that I washed 2 weeks ago sitting on my bed…I just move them over to sleep.

      • December 13, 2011 10:17 pm

LOL, Smh. In college, half of my bed was filled with laundry, books, makeup, etc. I just covered it up with a blanket and slept on the other side of the bed.
I should have probably confessed…. I also don’t iron laundry. If it needs to be ironed, I don’t buy it. If I accidentally buy something that needs to be ironed… well, I just wasn’t meant to wear it more than once. 🙂

    • December 9, 2011 7:42 pm

Hanging up* clothes. I look like such a creeper leaving 3 comments in a row!

    • December 13, 2011 10:26 pm

Thanks for your suggestions smh! I’m not sure I’ve ever read a psychological thriller. Will it give me bad dreams? I’m actually really sensitive to that. I’m a weirdo, I know. Chelsea Handler cracks me up, and I’ve been meaning to get one of her books. Thanks for the reminder.

I’m just going to say it. Twilight.

I will buy more clothes before washing the laundry. I don’t mind folding it; just washing it. I never listen to my voicemail messages. I usually wait til they get to about 30 and then listen and delete. I totally watch The View because of this clip(and Elisabeth Hasselbeck is HOT) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10HEp5ddR6c Yeah, that’s about it…that I am willing to admit.

    • December 13, 2011 10:22 pm

Thanks for your confessions, Nick. How about I wash, you fold?
Elisabeth Hasselbeck is NOT hot. She’s too skinny. Not to mention crazytown.

  11. December 9, 2011 6:31 pm

Confession: All this crazy holiday cheerfulness that I’ve been erratically trying to spread around this year is not to make other people smile and happy (which it does), but myself. I feel like if I don’t take this season by the offense, I’ll slink into a black hole of misery and loneliness. And right now, I’d rather fake happiness by baking cookies for the office and forcing my friends to make crafts with me than wallow and cry and fall into hibernation, because honestly, the latter is all I really want to do!

Confession #2: I seriously resent my young cat for not allowing me to have a tree in my house! If I did have a tree, she would surely rip it to shreds, leaving me to clean up after her destruction. :sigh:

    C’est la vie–Happy holidays 🙂

    • December 13, 2011 10:21 pm

      Mizkay,
I totally feel you. I’ve done that before – I’ve completely thrown myself into something I normally wouldn’t just to distract myself. Better going crazy with holiday cheerfulness than say, too much alcohol…. I don’t see anything wrong with it. And you know how they say “fake it till you make it”? You may find that you’ve convinced yourself!

Happy holidays… hope they are great for you. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be happy and you may surprise yourself.

Oh! I also hate folding…I mean HATE…will leave in a pile, wear my way through the pile and then wash again…

And now…I’m dealing with a pile (ok PILES) that must be folded because they no longer fit the little ones…

Confession: I keep my hair short because I don’t know how to do anything but the basic ponytail…no braids, no buns, heck…I can’t even use a round brush (once I got one stuck above my ear and it took HOURS to untangle) ; I can’t parallel park so I avoid the fan at all costs; I enjoy a “no shower” day on the weekend from time to time…

And I LOVE that you think your readers would enjoy my words…made my day!!

    • December 13, 2011 10:14 pm

      Lori,
I totally meant it! When you comment, you should put your name and URL so that people can click through. 🙂 You always leave such good comments I’m sure they’ll want to check out your blog!

Your technique for not folding the laundry sounds just like mine. Counter confession: I’ve also gotten one of those round hair brushes stuck in my hair. What I’m ashamed to admit is that it’s happened more than once (FAIL). (Wonder if this is an epidemic? Maybe they should outlaw those hair brushes? Can’t be a coincidence that two intelligent women got these hair brushes stuck in their hair!!)

I say as long as your “no shower” day on the weekend doesn’t become a “no shower” WEEK, it’s all good. Enjoy your smelly self! Hehe, not to imply you are smelly or anything….

Book suggestion: The Hunger Games series. Seriously. Super addicting. The first 2 are really good and quick reads but the third gets a little slow. Still a really interesting concept though and I really enjoyed it.

Confessions: I am also a words with friends addict, as well as a daytime tv addict. I will also watch storage wars and NCIS forever. The only Christmas decorating I’ve done is my tree which my cats have thankfully left alone.

    • December 13, 2011 10:09 pm

      SarahBeth,
Hope your tree is still safe from the cats. Now that would be the absolute worst – putting off putting up Christmas decorations only for your cats to mess them up. That might push me off the holiday edge. 🙂
I’m on the Hunger Games… you guys sold me!
(I used to have a Days of Our Lives addiction. I sorta miss it. Sometimes I thank God I no longer have DVR!)

Your BF should be able to find a better and more cheffy job soon. It’s a question of hrs., pay and mobility.

Wouldn’t it be cool if he worked at a winery restaurant…? 😀

No, my obsessions for now are about cycling and blogging. I even guest-wrote about it recently:

Christmas Song Parodies: Cycling and Blogging

    • December 13, 2011 10:08 pm

Congrats on the guest post Jean!

You are right, it would be cool if he worked at a winery restaurant. I mean, the thing with his job is that it is cheffy. He just happens to work at a restaurant that’s also attached to a night club. It’s a great restaurant, very high quality (and not cheap!), so it wouldn’t be fair for me to expect that he find something else simply because I’m being insecure. I mean, in the future if we got married/had kids, we’d have to consider his hours, but it’s a reputable restaurant and he likes what he does. I need to grow up. Blah. 🙂

At least your obessessions are good for you, Jean! I’m not sure too my cycling or blogging ever killed anyone!

  16. December 10, 2011 12:27 pm

I just want to start off by saying I love your blog. I’m a single young woman myself and I’m finding myself, enjoying myself and learning about myself. I’ve realized that it is okay to do that and I can still find happiness even if I am single. It’s what I need right now. 1coffeehouse.wordpress.com

      Amberpat,

Since you watch Chi news, you saw the hostage situation on Monday? That was down the street from me and made the commute home horrible.

    Books:
Ender’s Game – It’s Harry Potter in space written way before. 1977 actually.
Discworld – 39 books in the series. While short, it’ll take you a while to get through. Got to give the author props for still churning out great books now that he has alzheimer’s.
Eyre Affair – Another good series. Cheeky and very British.
Furies of Calderon – Fantasy series that isn’t overly thick with prose. Good story and characters.

    • December 13, 2011 10:02 pm

      Claudia,
I actually missed that story – but crazy, that was so close to you! I hope everyone got out okay… You should know, if you haven’t checked out other cities’ news, your news is CRAZY. You Chicagoans have a lot going on on a nightly basis! It’s much more entertaining (if that’s even the right word) than my news. Oh, and the Rod Blagojevich stuff never gets old. For me, anyway.

Thanks for all these suggestions – I’m not sure I’ve heard of any of them but they sound pretty interesting!

Awesome, Karen, thanks! Funny – a friend recommended the Shopaholic books a while back and I totally forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder!

Haha! I love this post, it’s kind of like your brain threw up all over your computer! Random stuff you can’t stop thinking about. Awesomeness.

    • December 13, 2011 9:58 pm

      Halen,
LOL, thank you. Because that is exactly what this post was for me :). I’m glad you enjoyed it even though it was RANDOM.

  20. December 10, 2011 10:05 pm

Chef loves you…right? (I’m assuming here). If that’s the case, don’t worry about the half-dressed females he’s surrounded by. Seriously. I am totally in love with my girlfriend and nobody else in the world matters. If it’s real and meant to be, that’s all you need to know! And no, I don’t think I’m the exception to the rule, even though guys get a bad rap.

I also hate folding laundry, even though it typically takes me five minutes a week.

    • December 13, 2011 9:58 pm

      Mark,
You’re right. I know it. Thanks for reminding me.
Also — sure, laundry takes five minutes to fold. But when you count all the time agonizing over how you don’t want to do it, then delaying putting the folded laundry away, and then unfolding the laundry as you are searching through piles for one shirt… well all of that takes A LOT of time! 🙂

  21. December 11, 2011 9:44 am

    Book suggestions:
The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins – I liked it more then I thought I would
The Strain Trilogy – Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan, if you like vamp
ire stories, this is a good one, but it not a traditional vampire
The Outlander Series, Diana Gabaldon. My sister read the entire series and really liked it. I have not started it yet.

    • December 13, 2011 9:52 pm

Thanks for all these suggestions! Hunger Games are certainly popular among you guys; I’ll have to try them. I’m adding the others to my list too. 🙂

” I have kept almost every receipt for the past 10 years. ” ?

.. hahaha.. well can’t blame you for being too careful..

    • December 13, 2011 9:51 pm

I know, right! At least I know I have nothing to worry about. The IRS can audit me, I can find receipts for books in college, I’m all set. Until I run out of receipt storage space, that is…

  23. December 11, 2011 8:37 pm

Hahah I didn’t know anyone ever delivered those “say hi” type of messages. Yesterday I was talking to my sister on the phone while out shopping with Friend, and she said “Say Hi to Friend” right before hanging up. Did I remember to tell Friend? Nope. We all have some kind of mental block against those type of messages, methinks.

    • December 13, 2011 9:50 pm

      Mayor Gia,
You know, I didn’t think anyone delivered those messages, until I started to pay attention to my friend Dawn’s behavior. She ALWAYS passes those messages along. If someone asks her to give someone a hug for her, damn it, hugs will be given. I’m thinking there are probably a lot of people like her. I just don’t think I have it in me. Too lazy. Sad thing is… not sure I would want to change!

      • December 18, 2011 11:51 am

Yeah learning to pass those messages on would be like, #239423423 on my New Year’s Resolutions list. Right under “Take juggling lessons.” But above “learn how to yo yo” because really, yo-yoing hasn’t been in since the 90s.

        • December 23, 2011 8:20 am

Lol, Mayor Gia. Your comment cracked me up. You are right, I’ve got LOTS of other things to improve upon before dedicating myself to passing along those messages!

  24. December 12, 2011 5:02 am

I can relate to one of your confessions which is about receipt hoarding! Yes I too have somehow never managed to throw away the receipt even when I know it would never be of any use to me again.Just the fright of needing the receipt in future keeps me going with this habit! Other confession would be –
—I say people I will remember them in my prayers but I never remember to remember them!lol
—I am a bit of a miser when it comes to calling , I text instead ;p
—At times I do behave like a hypocrite. But only ‘at times’.
Many more confessions but I don’t want to recall any more.

Funny, Kate — sometimes (okay, let’s be honest here, more times than not) I also forget people in my prayers when I intended to remember them. I need to keep a list or something! Glad to know that I’m not the only receipt hoarder. Part of me knows I need to throw the receipts away but I just know the minute I do I’m going to need one of them! LOL. I’m considering making an art project out of the receipts. I’m sure I could pull out all the receipts for ice cream and come up with some kind of crafty picture 🙂

  25. December 13, 2011 12:18 am

I just finished the first in the Hunger Games series, and it was dangerously entertaining–the type of book that leaves you tired at work the next day because you couldn’t stop reading the night before… One of the greatest stories I’ve ever read was Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It’s super long too, so it can keep you entertained for quite awhile. I know science-fiction is hit or miss with people, but the Ender series by Orson Scott Card is really well done (start with Ender’s Game).

    • December 13, 2011 9:36 pm

      micfeenormusic,
Thanks for your suggestions. My friend just started reading Hunger Games and I’m really considering it. That’s exactly what I need… only I need some discipline to actually go to bed when it’s time :). You know what’s funny is that I never thought I’d like science-fiction — but then again, I’ve never tried it! Kinda silly, really. I should at least give it a shot. Thanks for your comment!

  26. December 13, 2011 10:12 am

Hi! I am a new follower to your blog, I would suggest Twilight, the House of Night series (a bit young, but still interesting), Book of Negros, The Help, anything by Jodi Picoult or some biographies of your favourite stars, groups etc.

    • December 13, 2011 9:34 pm

Great suggestions, thanks nikilee! I’ve heard about The Help, but forgot about it. Think I may ask for that for Christmas. Welcome to Simply Solo, by the way, thanks for reading!

  27. December 13, 2011 11:59 am

Darn it. I wanted to quit my job and when they asked why I’d reply, “Because Catherine said I could.”

I’m always going to recommend a Koontz book (because I’m addicted). But if you want a good, heart-warming read, check out his book The Darkest Evening of the Year. It’s a very good story.

And as a little advice on one of your confessions (about Chef’s job), try not to worry about it and let it drag you down. Coming from someone who had to dealt with (a now ex) who was incredibly insecure about my job and the type of people I worked with every day thought to me they were just people, nothing different between them and those I would stand in line with in a coffee shop. But it got so bad I couldn’t even talk about work (or anything related to it) which was difficult because I loved my job and had different stories to tell almost every day. At some point I ended up resenting her for it and preferred just not talking because at the time a giant part of my life was my job. If she didn’t want to hear it then I really didn’t want to talk to her about anything else.

      Matthew,
Thanks for the book suggestion, but more importantly for your advice. This is really what I needed to hear. I mean, I knew it, but hearing it from a guy makes a big difference. I’m going to try and chill out more… I certainly don’t want to end up in the situation you were with your ex.
      Thanks for sharing 🙂

Confession: I really wanted to go to bed last night without taking a shower because I’d taken one earlier in the day but the boyfriend insisted because i’d gotten sweaty earlier and I didn’t want to do it AT ALL but then I did because I didn’t want my boyfriend thinking i was a pig. But that’s the ONLY reason.

LOL! Confession: There are several times I can think of that the ONLY reason I showered after the gym (before bed) was because I worried I would be judged if I didn’t. You are not alone! 🙂

Don’t feel bad about not decorating your tree. I haven’t even put up a tree yet.

I FINALLY got it up. Now all my energies will be spent sending you encouragement to get yours up. It is actually nice once it’s all done….
Now, I’m already dreading taking it down!

This brought me a little ‘mid-week’ work day humor to get through the remaining 8.5 hours remaining on-the-clock.

I just gotta say… I own a slanket too!! And it is WAY better than the Snuggie. My boyfriend got it for me as a gift 4 Christmases ago and I still wrap up in it on cold evenings. 🙂

      Rambling,
So glad I’m not the only one! Slankets rock! Let’s join a fan club. 🙂

I’m not sure if it’s been suggested, and I’m not really sure if you’ll read it, but East of Eden by Steinbeck is my favorite novel of all time.

Guilty pleasure: coffee. Even though I’m mad that I’m addicted to it, it’s a must have!

Thanks for your suggestion gracestovall! I’ll add it to my wish list.
You know, I’ve never gotten into coffee. Part of me wants to because I somehow think it’ll help me be more adult and connect with adults, but I’m so high maintenance that I think I’d be at Starbucks every day. I don’t need another expensive habit. Ice cream is enough. 🙂

Hi! I would suggest the Percy Jackson series – it’s a little young, but easy to read and entertaining. Especially if you liked Harry Potter, then I think you would enjoy these. The series gets better as it goes along, so make sure you get through at least the first 2 before you decide to keep reading or not.
The end of July I just broke up with someone after 5 1/2 years, and I just wanted to thank you for doing this blog. Between Percy Jackson, Sex and the City, and this blog life has been a little more bearable. 🙂

      Jessica,
Thanks for the tip! And that was the best comment to hear… I’m so glad I’ve made your breakup even a little more bearable. Can’t believe my blog has impacted people in that way, but it makes me really happy that sharing my story has helped even one person. Hope you are doing better!
